The 3 greatest business mistakes to avoid this Christmas

As we approach silly season, it is easy to get caught up in the madness that envelops us in the final weeks of 2012.  We cover 3 of the greatest mistakes that businesses can make in the eyes of their customers and offer ways to avoid this.

Make the final months of 2012 a great opportunity to tout 2013 as the best year yet.

1. Promising and not delivering to customers

We have all no doubt experienced dissatisfaction from a business at Christmas, from a tradesman/service provider stating a start/completion date and failing on that promise, to service being less than outstanding as staffing resources are stretched.

Tips­ – whilst we all want to take advantage of all work that comes our way, it’s important to know our limitations or to increase resources where demand requires.  Additional business in the face of providing poor service is a short term business strategy.  Setting standards of service in your business, then maintaining those standards will lead to a more successful business, now and into the future.

2. Forgetting to mention any extended closure time

If your business will be closed for an extended period of time over Christmas and New Year, make sure that you communicate this with your customers prior to closing.  By not doing this you run the risk of infuriating customers who did not know of your closure times.

3. Forgetting to acknowledge and reward customers, staff and suppliers for their support

This is the most common faux pas that businesses make.  Forgetting completely or bringing together something at the last minute that is delivered late can mostly generate the same result.
